An Interesting Property of LPCs for Sonorant Vs Fricative Discrimination
نویسندگان
چکیده
Linear prediction (LP) technique estimates an optimum all-pole filter of a given order for a frame of speech signal. The coefficients of the all-pole filter, 1/A(z) are referred to as LP coefficients (LPCs). The gain of the inverse of the all-pole filter, A(z) at z = 1, i.e, at frequency = 0, A(1) corresponds to the sum of LPCs, which has the property of being lower (higher) than a threshold for the sonorants (fricatives). When the inverse-tan of A(1), denoted as T(1), is used a feature and tested on the sonorant and fricative frames of the entire TIMIT database, an accuracy of 99.07% is obtained. Hence, we refer to T(1) as sonorant-fricative discrimination index (SFDI). This property has also been tested for its robustness for additive white noise and on the telephone quality speech of the NTIMIT database. These results are comparable to, or in some respects, better than the state-of-the-art methods proposed for a similar task. Such a property may be used for segmenting a speech signal or for non-uniform frame-rate analysis. Keywords—Linear prediction, phonetic classes, manner classes, V/U classification, segmentation, SFDI

The feature [sonorant] in lexical access
Does the feature [sonorant] influence access to lexical entries? We created two nonwords by replacing a fricative in a real word with either another fricative (match condition) or a resonant (mismatch condition). Participants heard the nonwords and were asked to recover the real word. Errors were greater in the mismatch condition, suggesting that [-sonorant] is represented in the target fricati...
متن کاملCUNY Conference on the Segment in Phonology The Phonology and Phonetics of Ambiguity: A Case Study
The behaviour of /v/ which, in languages as diverse as Hebrew, Hungarian and Russian, patterns with both sonorants and obstruents, is a puzzle for phonological theory (Jakobson, 1978; Barkai and Horvath, 1978; Hayes, 1984; Kiparsky, 1985; Padgett, 2002; Kiss and Bárkányi, 2006). In this paper I situate such cases in the broader typology of /v/’s patterning and distribution. A database of over 5...
متن کاملSix- and twelve-month-olds' discrimination of native versus non-native between- and within-organ fricative place contrasts
Discrimination of native versus non-native betweenand within-articulatory organ fricative contrasts was examined in 6 and 12 month-old infants. 12 month-olds discriminated between(tongue-tip vs. lips) but not within-organ place contrasts (two tongue tip constriction locations), but 6 montholds only did so for the non-native between-organ contrast. The results support the Articulatory Organ Hypo...
متن کاملCues or Contexts in Feature Licensing Constraints
Steriade (1993, 1995, 1996) has proposed that the distribution of phonological contrasts is explained, not by a principle of Prosodic Licensing (Itô 1986, Goldsmith 1990) (licensing of features only in certain prosodic positions, e.g. onset position), but rather by the presence of sufficiently audible phonetic cues in the relevant contexts that signal these contrasts. For example, Steriade (199...
متن کاملInfluence of vocalic context on perception of the [zh]-[s] distinction.
Three experiments investigated the conditions under which fricative perception is influenced by following vocalic context. In Experiment 1, a reaction-time task, listeners showed no such influences , suggesting that they reached decisions about the fricative category before processing the vocalic context. In Experiment 2, a fixed-standard AX discrimination task employing synthetic fricative noi...
